Ensuring a Comfortable Fit for Your Work Boots

When it comes to choosing the right work footwear, safety and comfort should be your top priorities. You’ve assessed your worksite and know your safety requirements, but now it's time to focus on finding the perfect fit. Remember, this isn’t just about aesthetics; you’ll be wearing these boots for long hours, and a proper fit is crucial for both comfort and safety. Here are some essential tips to help you choose the right work footwear.

SHOP AT THE RIGHT TIME

Always shop for work footwear during or after the end of your workday. This is because your feet tend to swell throughout the day, and shopping later ensures that you’ve accounted for this and will have a more accurate fit.

Wear Your Work Socks

Ensure you are wearing the same type of socks that you would typically wear during your workday when trying on new footwear. The thickness of the sock can significantly affect the fit, so this step is crucial for accuracy.

Try on Both Shoes

Make sure you are trying on the pair, not just the left or right shoe. Feet sizes often differ between your left and right foot, and you need to ensure that both shoes fit comfortably.

Lace Up and Move Around

Fully lace the footwear and take the time to walk around, bend, and flex your feet. This will help you gauge the comfort and fit during various movements you'll likely make during your workday. Once purchased, it’s recommended to wear the footwear indoors on a clean surface for a few minutes to ensure you have chosen the correct size.

Check for Rubbing or Pinching

When you first try the boot on, pay close attention to any rubbing or pinching in the toe or heel area. Discomfort in these areas can lead to blisters or more severe foot problems over time.

Understand Brand and Style Variations

Different brands and styles of footwear can fit differently. Just because you are typically a size 9 in your favorite athletic shoe does not mean you will be the same size in a work boot. Always try on multiple sizes and styles to find the best fit for your feet.

Orthotics

If you require orthotics, it is imperative to insert them when fitting your footwear.* Orthotics can significantly change the way your footwear fits and feels.

*Note that the insertion, change, or removal of any footbeds, insoles, arch supports, or orthotics will not only affect the fit of your footwear but also its protective performance. This could potentially cause your footwear to no longer meet the CSA Z195 Protective Footwear Standard.

By following the above tips, you can ensure that your work boots provide the necessary comfort and protection to keep you safe and comfortable throughout your long workdays. Remember, taking the time to find the perfect fit now will pay off with fewer foot issues and increased comfort in the future.
